Seeking Sustainable Sponsorship for Hologram

I need to have an honest conversation with you about Hologram's future.

I'm Bart Blast, the creator of Hologram. For over 5 years, I've been working on this full-stack Elixir web framework that automatically transpiles Elixir to JavaScript, bringing the language to the browser. Nearly 3 of those years have been full-time Hologram development.

The current situation is unsustainable.

I'm now juggling contract work alongside Hologram development - working 60+ hour weeks trying to keep the project moving forward while paying my bills. I currently have a few generous sponsors on GitHub contributing about $100 per month in total, but I need approximately $2,500 to cover my living expenses and work on Hologram full-time.

Given Elixir's smaller community, individual sponsorships are incredibly valuable but won't be enough on their own to bridge this gap. I need organizational sponsors who see the value in bringing pure Elixir to the frontend.

The reality is simple: Without sustainable sponsorship, I cannot continue working on Hologram full-time. Either development significantly slows down as I prioritize contract work, or I continue this unsustainable pace and burn out. Neither option is good for Hologram or the community that's already depending on it.

Production Use

While Hex downloads remain modest (~1.5K) due to the current involved installation process, developers are already experimenting with Hologram and even using it in production environments. The upcoming standalone mode will reduce installation to just 2 terminal commands, removing both the Phoenix requirement and the barrier for developers who simply want to try the framework.

Community Response

The feedback from the Elixir community has been incredibly encouraging. Here's what developers are saying:

Hey, this is great! I rolled my first Hologram application into production this week. I found the Hologram dev experience to be exactly what was described on the box, the code easy to work with, and Bart Blast extremely responsive to a couple of snags I encountered.

This project is really crazy, it's built on top of the Phoenix Framework and transparently transpiles Elixir to JS, handles state management and... it just works. Yes, yes, my surprise is that transpilation seems to be working consistently well. Obviously, the speed on the client is going to be brutal. (Translated from Spanish)

LOADS of potential with Hologram. The 'NextJS' of Elixir, hopefully done right.

More feedback from the community:

  • Pal on ElixirForum: "Loving Hologram btw. It's a thing of beauty."
  • Matt Miller on ElixirForum: "I now get crazy responsive stuff with each keystroke..."
  • bdunks on Hacker News: "I've just read through the entire documentation end-to-end. It's very clear and well written."
  • Bunny Lushington on Reddit: "It's dead simple - the docs take 20 minutes to read and seems to handle all the JS that I don't want to write ... like all of it."

The Challenge: Building an Entire Ecosystem

To understand why Hologram requires full-time dedication, you need to grasp the project's scope. This isn't just another framework - Hologram's scope essentially encompasses:

The Scope
Phoenix + Surface + ElixirScript + React + Local-First

That's right - Hologram is effectively building the equivalent of multiple major frameworks combined into one cohesive solution. Each of these components represents years of work by entire teams, yet Hologram aims to integrate all these capabilities into a unified, pure Elixir experience.

After working on Hologram full-time for almost 3 years now, I've come to realize that this kind of project requires sustained, uninterrupted focus to make meaningful progress - working part-time simply won't move the needle significantly. Beyond the deep technical work, I also need to manage the project, answer community questions, review pull requests, maintain documentation, and support users. The current situation where I'm splitting time between contract work and Hologram means constant context-switching, lost momentum, and an inability to give both the codebase and the community the attention they deserve. This isn't sustainable, and more importantly, it's not fair to the community that's already depending on Hologram.

Why This Matters

Hologram represents a unique opportunity for the Elixir ecosystem. While LiveView revolutionized server-driven interactivity, Hologram brings Elixir to the client - enabling instant UI, offline apps, and modern frontend capabilities without JavaScript.

This isn't just about avoiding JavaScript - it's about:
๐Ÿงฉ
Code Reuse
Write your business logic once in Elixir and use it everywhere

Consistent Language Guarantees
Maintain Elixir's guarantees across the full stack
